Target Account List

What a target account list is, how it differs from a generic lead list, and why most spreadsheet versions go stale within weeks.

A target account list (sometimes called a TAL) is a curated, prioritized list of specific companies a sales team intends to pursue, as opposed to a generic list of leads pulled from a database by broad filters. The difference is intent: a target account list is built around your ICP and ideally ranked by fit, not just "matches the search filters."

What a good one includes, beyond just company names

The problem nobody mentions: it goes stale immediately

A target account list built once, in a spreadsheet, starts decaying the moment it's finished. Companies get acquired, downsize, or simply stop being relevant, and new companies that fit just as well never get added because nobody re-runs the process. This is common enough that it has its own failure mode, covered in My Target Account Spreadsheet Is Always Out of Date.

Building one without a RevOps team

You don't need a dedicated ops person to build a first version, you need a clear ICP, a way to find companies that match it (see lookalike company), and a consistent way to rank what you find. The step-by-step is in How to Build a Target Account List Without a RevOps Team.
